Chief Warrant Officer Hugh Thompson, an Army helicopter pilot who rescued Vietnamese civilians during the My Lai massacre in 1968 and reported the killings to his superior officers died yesterday and was the inspiration for this talk. He embodied the teaching: Don’t do the right thing looking for reward, because it may not come. We can practice doing the right thing by trusting our intention to do so. There are myriad reasons it can be difficult to do the right thing, and a mindfulness practice helps us align with our intention, which in turn strengthens us.
