One DWL reader asks: My sangha is studying DWL and I am following the studies on your website as well. I find that I'm being overwhelmed by my practice of recognizing and feeling the ouch of dukkha. I'm experiencing dukkha on my cushion and in daily life---it seems to be everywhere. Can you suggest how I can better understand and/or modify my practice?
In reply, it's not so uncommon for this to happen when we first see for ourself the evidence of the Buddha's noble truth, there is suffering, in our life and in the world. But it's also important for us to remember that the Buddha taught the 4 NTs as a way out of suffering and as a means to access more freedom and joy. Whenever we are feeling overwhelmed by our practice, we need to bring it back into balance. This is an important skill that most of us have to employ again and again as we attempt to evolve as wise and caring human beings. Mindfulness of suffering is a valuable insight that can serve us to live more wisely especially when it is balanced with compassion. I would suggest that more compassion is what is being called for right now. When awareness of suffering arises, let it be a reminder for you to offer yourself or others a message of loving-kindness. Practicing metta first thing in the morning or before going to sleep might help as well. As Phillip just mentioned in his Thanksgiving message, a practice of gratitude leads to a gladdening of mind. It may help to reflect more on what is good and right right now while appreciating all of those who have helped you to arrive at this place in your life. Try brightening and balancing your perspective by engaging in things that make you happy--- whether it's being in nature, or listening to your favorite music, or spending time with close friends, or giving of your time and talents to others, etc. While sitting in meditation, make sure you're comfortable and begin by inviting ease into your body and mind. I hope this helps.
May we all find peace and ease in life just as it is!
With metta,
Meg
