Metta means unconditional loving-kindness. It is cultivated and practiced as one of the four sublime states known as the brahma-viharas. It is also one of the ten paramitas, or perfections of character. There are many versions of metta.
To participate in the metta practice
Traditional Metta Phrases:
· May I be happy.
· May I be at peace.
· May I live with ease.
· May I be free from suffering.
Other Interpretation:
May I be safe from inner and outer harm.
May I be happy and peaceful.
May I be healthy and strong.
May I care for myself, joyfully.
In the Khuddaka Nikāya's Paṭisambhidāmagga, traditionally ascribed to Ven. Sariputta, is a section entitled Mettākathā (Ps. 2.4, "Instruction on Loving-Kindness").
"May all beings be
free from enmity, affliction and anxiety,
and live happily.
Phillip Moffitt's Sunday Sangha:
May you be safe from internal and external harm.
May you have a calm, clear mind and a peaceful loving heart.
May you be physically strong, healthy, and vital.
May you experience love, joy, wonder, and wisdom in this life, just as it is.
